EVALUATION Question 8

Looking back at your prelim task, what do you feel you have learned in this progression to the full product...

PRELIM ENTITLED 'UNTITLED'

This was the first video we filmed after just learning about how to use the camera and how to use the programs FCP, SoundTrack Pro and Livetype.

TITLES.
In the prelim, the titles did NOT follow convention as we hadn't done the research. We had 'directed and produced by d.e.m.s. first and then had the title of the film at 23 seconds.

MISE EN SCENE

In our prelim, we decided to use such props as fake blood, vampire teeth, tesco bag and black and yellow tape. Even though it was our first time filming I think that all of the mise en scene worked well together.

Different shots GOOD & BAD

  • the first shot looked good at first but I think that showing my college pass was a bright idea.
  • the second and third shot look a little dark
  • I really liked the 4th shot, but looking back I think there is too much space at the side
  • the last shot is blocking Mariama's head.

FINAL FILM ENTITLED 'THE CYCLE'

TITLES

When we were editing the cycle we had done a lot of research and so we knew how to do the conventional title order and so we made sure it was done exactly right in our film opening.

MISE EN SCENE
As this was our final film, we wanted to have the best location.
We filmed at South bank for the London Eye and Big Ben shots, which is where we spent most time filming and then at Elias' and Demi's houses to film the nightmare shots and the shopping shots. We also filmed the 'flashback' shots in a park near the college. The props we used were a flower, a map, fake blood, tesco bags...

EVALUATION Question 7

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this products?

  • blogger - Through using blogger, I have learnt to write posts, upload images and embed videos. I have used it to show all of the research for thrillers and to note updates and changes for our thriller.

  • JVC digital cameras with memory cards. - Using these professional cameras have helped get the best shots and with the memory cards it makes it easier to upload to the computers.

  • Macs - Before doing media, I wasn't too sure on how to use Macs and how the programs worked, but after using them, it has helped with the planning/editing of the film.

  • Final Cut Pro, Livetype, Soundtrack Pro, Quicktime, Handbrake. All of these programs have helped to edit and watch the FINAL film opening for "THE CYCLE". FCP to edit, Livetype for the titles, Soundtrack for the music, Quicktime to watch and handbrake to put the film to a mp4 so it an be uploaded to blogger for everyone to watch.

  • Flip cameras. - The flip cameras were good for getting the audience feedback and they were also quite easy to use as they were small and simple.

  • Windows movie maker - I used Windows movie maker to make little clips of ideas of how the film would be. It helped to show others what the film would include..

  • phones to film - Using phones to film the audience feedback and make little video blogs.

ALL of these technologies worked together because without 1, something would not have gone the way it should have. i.e. if you were to use final cut pro without a mac it would NOT have worked..

EVALUATION Question 2

How does your media product represent social groups?

Our film represents social groups through the use of stereotypes.

We have a MALE that is the stalker and ALL of the FEMALES are the victims.

shot where you can see Elias stalking - the male stereotype
Shot where I am dead, the female victim - female stereotype

EVALUATION 4&5: WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCTION AND WHY? HOW WILL YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?

EVALUATION Question 3

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Here is a little character profile of someone who I think will be the target audience:

  • - Laura
  • - 23
  • - loves art & design
  • - interior designer
  • - likes to go to the cinema and hang out with her friends
  • - spends some of her time on social networking sites e.g. Facebook, twitter, tumblr.
  • - doesn't like gory horror films like SAW
  • - doesn't like things not going to plan

FAV cinema genres would be old classics, murderous passion thrillers and psychological thrillers.

Inside her bag you would find the following:

Blackberry
earphones
Interior designs magazine
Keys
purse
Oyster

I think that Laura would be our target audience because after getting feedback from the class we realised that maybe we were looking at a audience ages that was too low and so having done research, psychological thrillers tend to appeal more to women and that it what our thriller is.

EVALUATION Question 6

These were all of the positive responses from the class after they watched the thriller. The main things they liked were the effects and edits.

These were the  negative responses from the class after they watched it. The main thing that seemed to come up was the length of the breathing.

When asked by the class whether or not they would want to watch it in the cinema, the response was minimal, therefore I don't think that the age group of the thriller was for the people on out class.

EVALUATION - Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In real media products there is use of:

  • an establishing shot - We used The London eye

  • title sequence is in a specific order - We had the ident first and then the production company followed by the actors names and finally, the music & edited by...

  • ident - normally the music comes after the ident but we decided to add heavy breathing as well as some of the music

  • setting a mood - the breathing right at the start shows that there will be some sort of tension in the film and that creates a chilling mood for the audience

OUR Group 14

Looking around during the filming process i saw that many groups were struggling or got easily frustrated with all group members surrounded around the computer screen shouting and telling each other there ideas. As a way to keep our filming pace fast we allocated jobs to each member in most circumstances.
For instance when we met up for filming we decided who would bring the props for that day or who would bring the filming equipment.

  • Sheri- Focused on the Titles of our Thriller opening and the way it would be presented
  • Elias- Focused on the music that went into any scenes we needed, he often used Soundtrack pro
  • Mariama & Myself (Demi)- Focused on Editing ad doing all the Importing and Exporting of devices.
We took it in turn to return equipment if needed.
As a group i actually think we worked rather well, even tough we had a few disagreements we always done majority vote or just tried to incorporate every ones idea the best we could.

OVERDUE video blog 2

The second video blog we made after finishing filming..

WOO!

OVERDUE video blog 1

This is the first video blog we made after filming the first day..

Final days of editing...

These are the final days of editing our film and I feel like it really coming together!

AS out film is based on Elias having a nightmare, we were able to use a wide range of effects and transitions to make it seem more like a real nightmare.

All we really need to do as of now is add the titles and the sound (Which has been done) to the film and make sure that it isn't too under or too over the 2minute limit.

TITLES.. again.

Yesterday the troubles with the titles were too much for me so I left it and today i've started again.

Today it seems much easier and after fiddling with the fonts and effects I found the one that suits the film the most and so it makes the editing of the final film so much easier.

The font that I decided to go with for the names is Haettenshcweiler but the one that I used for the main title was Britannic Bold.

Hopefully the rest of the group will like these choices...

Screenshots of working with Livetype

Titles

As the deadline is nearing, there are still the titles to be done.

I am experimenting with the fonts on livetype and hoping to have them ALL done by the end of the day.

I am experiencing quite some difficulties but i am eager to get past them.

Some of the fonts don't have the effects that i want.. others don't suit the film.

But by the deadline it will all be done and ready to show!

SOUND.

We still have to make our soundtrack for our opening to our film. We have found something that we like on youtube but for copyright reasons we will have to make our own version using SoundTrackPro. The sound consists of piano and drums but we like the feel to it as it sounds very operatic but at the same time it is gives the impression that this is the opening to something bad that is going to happen. We should have the sound produced and edited by wednesday so that in thursdays lesson we can add it to the film and have it as a final movie on friday! :D

Rough Cut Deadline

MORE CHANGES.
After showing our rough cut to Rebecca, we saw the improvements that we needed to make:

  • Fade in for the opening so that it doesn't just start automatically
  • Decisions for the final fonts and where the titles will be placed during the opening sequence
  • Closing up of some of the gaps in the scenes so that it flows better
  • Transitions when Demi walks to barrier as it is quite obvious that i am not in the same position in the previous clips
  • Shot Reverse Shot needs to be a bit longer to really captivate the technique
  • Whether or not we would keep the frame around setting
  • Filters for the sleep shots (Elias' Nightmares) to make it look more realistic

storyboard with pictures from on the set.

I just decided to make a quicky shot animatic of our opening sequence-rough idea no were near the real thing but the concept and ordering is very much the same, however seeing as we haven't made a soundtrack yet i just used one another song.

Screen grabs for editing process

This is were we decided to put our title so we were experimenting with the font on Final Cut Pro, rather than Live Type. We do want it to be positioned on the top right of the opening shot. In big bold letters, plain font not fancy but still giving that suspicious edge.
We started to edit the clips and put it in a rough order, we actually really like our shots and the way it was filmed. We are using lots of 'changes in speed' to make clips faster and create that tension that we want our audience to feel while watching.
All of our clips that we have used and video's made that will be posted up soon.
